Three Questions to Ask Yourself for a Better 2025: Insights from a Psychotherapist

As we approach a new year, many people start thinking about resolutions and ways to make positive changes. But resolutions can sometimes feel more like pressure than inspiration, and too often, they fizzle out before February rolls around. Instead of focusing on specific goals, consider a different approach this year by asking yourself three powerful questions to help you grow in 2025. These questions encourage self-awareness, personal growth, and alignment with your true values—keys to creating meaningful and sustainable change.

As a psychotherapist, I often encourage clients to explore these types of questions to gain clarity and uncover personal insights. Reflecting on these questions can set the stage for a more intentional, fulfilling year and open doors to self-compassion and resilience.

1. What do I want to let go of to make room for new growth?

In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to hold onto routines, relationships, or habits that no longer serve us. Holding onto these can take up mental and emotional space, making it difficult to welcome new possibilities. Take some time to ask yourself what you might be carrying that feels heavy, outdated, or limiting.

Consider this question in a few areas:

  • Mindset: Are there recurring thoughts, fears, or self-doubts that no longer serve you?'

  • Relationships: Are there relationships that feel one-sided, or that may have outgrown their original purpose?

  • Habits: Are there routines that feel more draining than energizing, or coping mechanisms that no longer help you?

Letting go doesn’t have to mean cutting things out cold turkey; it can be as simple as loosening your grip on certain expectations or setting new boundaries that prioritize your well-being. When we release what no longer serves us, we make space for things that truly align with our goals and values.

2. What values do I want to focus on this year?

Values are the core principles that guide our actions and decisions. By identifying your values, you can bring a sense of purpose and direction to the year ahead. Instead of measuring success by achievements alone, you can measure it by how aligned you are with the qualities you want to cultivate.

To uncover your values, consider:

  • Reflecting on past experiences: What moments made you feel fulfilled, proud, or at peace? Look for the underlying values in those experiences—maybe it’s creativity, connection, kindness, or resilience.

  • Identifying role models: Think of someone you admire. What qualities do they embody that resonate with you?

  • Imagining the future: Picture yourself at the end of 2025. How do you want to describe this year, and what values guided you to feel fulfilled?

Once you identify your values, you can use them as a compass. For example, if growth is a priority, you might seek out learning opportunities or new experiences. If balance is essential, you might commit to creating boundaries that support both work and personal life. Focusing on values keeps you grounded in what truly matters and encourages you to make choices that feel authentic.

3. How can I nurture my mental and emotional well-being this year?

Taking time to prioritize mental and emotional health is essential to building resilience and ensuring a better year. This question invites you to consider self-care practices that go beyond quick fixes or external solutions. Instead, it’s about finding what deeply nurtures you on a consistent basis.

Some ideas to reflect on:

  • Daily self-care practices: Think about small, manageable routines that bring you peace or joy. This could be journaling, meditation, movement, or spending time in nature.

  • Seeking support when needed: If you’ve been considering therapy or joining a support group, ask yourself if this could be the right time to prioritize that step. Seeking support can provide insight and tools that empower you to face challenges and care for yourself.

  • Setting healthy boundaries: Evaluate the boundaries you have around work, relationships, and time. Are there areas where you could advocate for yourself more to reduce stress and increase fulfillment?

Remember that nurturing well-being is a continuous process, not a one-time goal. Be gentle with yourself as you explore what practices genuinely support your mental and emotional health. The journey is just as important as the destination.

Reflecting on These Questions

Reflection doesn’t have to be a one-time activity at the start of the year; these questions can be revisited periodically. Try to journal your thoughts, discuss them with a friend or therapist, or simply take a quiet moment to think them over. Keeping these questions in mind can help you navigate 2025 with clarity, purpose, and a deeper connection to yourself.

Instead of a set list of resolutions, these questions allow you to explore what truly matters and what might bring you the most fulfillment this year. With this foundation, you can approach the new year with confidence, ready to create positive change that resonates on a deeper level. Here’s to a meaningful and intentional 2025!
